The Dennis Hanratty Era — A Four-Decade Legacy
For much of MVUT's history, Dennis Hanratty served as Executive Director, guiding the organization through decades of change while remaining a steady advocate for Mount Vernon and Westchester tenants.
A Lifetime of Tenant Advocacy
Under former Dennis Hanratty's leadership, MVUT grew from a grassroots tenant group into a respected community institution. He walked tenants through court proceedings, helped families secure emergency assistance, and trained generations of organizers to stand with their neighbors.
His desk was rarely clear because his door was always open. Whether answering a late-night call or meeting a resident facing eviction, Dennis believed that every tenant deserved to be heard.
Decades of Service, One Neighborhood at a Time
For approximately four decades, Dennis worked at the intersection of housing, law, and community care. He built partnerships with legal aid providers, city agencies, and elected officials, ensuring that tenants had somewhere to turn when housing became uncertain.
His legacy lives on in the cases won, the families kept housed, and the tenant leaders who learned advocacy at his side. MVUT continues that work today in the same spirit of service.
Our Beginning
Mount Vernon United Tenants (MVUT) was founded in 1986 by tenants who believed that renters deserved a strong, organized voice in their own city. Neighbors facing unsafe conditions, sudden rent increases, and the threat of displacement came together to share information and stand with one another.
What began as meetings in living rooms, church basements, and apartment lobbies grew into a trusted community organization serving tenants throughout Mount Vernon and Westchester County.
Our Mission
MVUT works to inform, support, and stand alongside tenants. Our mission is to protect tenant rights, preserve affordable housing, and help residents remain safely and stably in their homes.
We do this through education, one-on-one assistance, tenant organizing, referrals, and advocacy for stronger housing protections.
Tenant Advocacy
For decades MVUT has helped tenants understand their rights and act on them: repairs and heat complaints, rent overcharges, lease questions, discrimination, harassment, and eviction notices.
We help tenants document conditions, communicate with landlords, reach the right agency, and connect with legal referrals when a case requires an attorney.
Building Organizing
MVUT believes tenants are strongest together. We support residents in forming building-wide tenant associations, holding meetings, electing leaders, and negotiating with owners and managers as a united group.
Organized buildings have secured repairs, restored heat and hot water, improved security, and pushed back against conditions that no single tenant could change alone.
Homelessness Prevention
Keeping families housed has always been central to our work. MVUT helps tenants facing eviction, arrears, or loss of income find emergency assistance, rental support programs, and social services before a housing crisis becomes homelessness.
Early intervention saves homes. Many of the tenants we assist come to us with a court notice in hand and leave with a plan and a path forward.
Community Partnerships
MVUT works alongside legal service providers, city and county agencies, faith communities, senior centers, and neighborhood groups across Mount Vernon and Westchester County.
These partnerships extend what we can offer, allowing tenants to reach the right help quickly instead of navigating systems alone.
MVUT Today
Today MVUT continues to serve tenants, seniors, families, and community members with information, advocacy, education, referrals, and support. The housing challenges have changed since 1986, but the mission has not.
We remain a tenant-led organization rooted in Mount Vernon, committed to safe homes, fair treatment, and affordable housing for every resident.
